2007 marked the inaugural National Sweet Teen Pageant (NST). The pageant was founded by Jack Carr, former and founding State Executive Director of New York's Outstanding Teen Scholarship and former member of the Miss America's Outstanding Teen (MAOT) National Advisory Board. The competition parallels the long-running and much beloved National Sweetheart Pageant in Hoopeston, Illinois, which coincides with a regional sweetcorn festival. In 2008, the competition welcomed eleven young women in a format that utilizes phone conversations for private interview, traditional resume and community service essay, and media (DVD or video) to judge the onstage components of Talent, Activewear, Eveningwear and Onstage Interview. Eleven contestants represent the states of Maine, Vermont (3), New Hampshire, New York (2), Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri and Arizona. Among the contestants are four returning from 2007. Over $10,000 in prizes and cash awards will be distributed, not counting six optional awards.
